Gabriele Herzog travaille au bâton d’huile sur des toiles de lin, produisant des éléments de lumière et d’obscurité, ou plutôt d’espace négatif et positif, qui deviennent alors complexes et indéfinis.
Ce qui était autrefois positif semble maintenant être négatif. Il existe alors une tension formidable et délicate entre l’équilibre de ces deux espaces, une réaction émotionnelle immédiate se crée alors, un sentiment que l’équilibre peut être rompu à tout moment. Les œuvres sont alors regardées avec prudence, dégagent un sentiment de calme, mais n’en sont pas moins menaçantes.
Dans ses oeuvres, Gabriele se concentre sur la juxtaposition de couleurs, de lignes et de formes sur la toile et sur l’interaction et l’interprétation de ces formes : elles sont organiques et amorphes, semblent flotter, vibrer, avec une subtilité sereine mais dans un effet comme dramatique.
En référence à la révolution de l’abstractionnisme pictural qui commence avec Kandinsky, la forme des couleurs et les sons musicaux s’entremêlent, témoignant de la naissance d’une correspondance entre le son et la couleur, l’alphabet des sons et l’harmonie des couleurs.
Voulant exprimer l’essentiel, elle applique peu de matière sur sa toile et s’applique à des combinaisons de peintures et de pensées qui, à coups de pinceau, maintiennent ses oeuvres dans un équilibre précaire. L’utilisation de toiles brutes, non traitées, souligne cette volonté d’exprimer le plus de choses avec un seul matériel disponible.
La puissance et l’intensité de l’impact de l’œuvre d’Herzog sont amplifiées par la couleur, la ligne, la forme et le matériau. C’est ainsi que l’artiste peut exprimer toute une gamme de pensées avec des moyens limités, dont le résultat est une peinture pleine de tension et en constante évolution dans laquelle les couleurs s’affirment et vibrent dans toute leur plénitude.
