Memory and action: the painting is both a lived experience, in the present of the activity that is painting, and a visible, preserved trace of the very thing that is being lived there. [ ... ] We could speak of a link, like a taut thread, to designate this constitutive relationship in David Lewis's practice, between the painting in the process of being made and the memory of all those strata on which the present literally clings. For David Lewis, painting is first and foremost a question of layers, of covering and, if you like, of discovery, between painting and scraping.
For the man who entitled a series of canvases "La question de fond" (The Question of Background), there is no background except the impure weave between what is above and what is below. The colour, [ ... ] like the surface, dug out as much as painted, is born of this constant mixture between what has been done and what has been undone. For the artist scratches [ ... ] as much as he paints, as if it were a question of fighting against paint and its covering power, so that the painting constantly remembers what it is built on.
A way of recalling painting to its own memory.
Above all, it is a way of reminding us that the visible is haunted by an invisible that is constantly on its way to the surface.
