In his studio, I imagine, Michael Kaul takes the blank canvases, and when they lie side by side, they look like ice floes. Their bright, unused surface is attractive, open to possibilities, but also challenging. Capable of bearing something, they nevertheless exude uncertainty and arouse doubt. This makes them, like real ice floes, as alluring as they are threatening.
