Jo Hummel was born in 1982 in Hampshire, England. 

She studied at Kingston University London 2001-2004 and Royal College of Art London 2004-2006. Her recent solo exhibitions include Artist in Residence, Saatchi Art Lounge, during Frieze Week London 2017, joint solo Deep End Echo Sid Motion Gallery and Porcelain and Paper, CAA Gallery London during London Crafts Week 2016. Her work has been included in satellite exhibition Afternoon Teaat the 53rd Venice Biennale with WW Gallery London, Jerwood Drawing Prize London 2012 and RA Summer Exhibition London and London Art Fair 2019. Joanne was longlisted for the Beers London Contemporary Visions exhibition and John Moores Painting Prize 2018, and also in recent years received a number of Arts Council Grants for the Arts awards for temporary installations and research residencies. Works by Jo Hummel are included in both public and private collections and she has a growing international collector base. Her work was featured in the Observer newspaper in an article titled ‘‘Next Generation turns its back on Emin and Hirst’s conceptual artworks’ May 2011, and ‘Picking up a Picasso is one click away’ in the Times August 2013.

Jo Hummel trained at the Royal College of Art and has established an international exhibition profile across the UK, Europe, the United States and South Africa. Recent solo exhibitions include Stars Wrapped in Skin at Victor Lope Contemporaneo, Barcelona (2025).

Recent joint exhibitions include Template at Fold Gallery, London (2023) and Love Letter at Gruin Gallery, Los Angeles (2022). Her work has been shown in major group exhibitions such as Small is Beautiful at Flowers Gallery (London, 2019–2026), Interface at Lille Grand Palais (France, 2023), Art Karlsruhe (Germany, 2022–2023), the Investec Cape Town Art Fair (2023), London Art Fair, and the 53rd Venice Biennale. Hummel’s paintings are held in notable collections including Christian Dior, Clintons (Trafalgar Square, London), the Kilburn Foundation (Cape Town), LinkedIn London Headquarters, and The Shelborne Hotel, Miami Beach. She has received multiple grants from Arts Council England, including a 2024 DYCP Award. She is represented by The Tagli (London), Macadam Gallery (Brussels), Víctor Lope Contemporaneo (Barcelona), and Amelie du Chalard (Paris/New York). In 2025, she completed a new commission for TikTok’s London Headquarters, creating a site-specific installation for the company’s UK base and is Artist in Residence at Thread, Senegal, invited by Joseph and Annie Albers Foundation.
